Definitions

Below are the common definitions that will come handy.

Process

Process is a series of action or steps taken in order to convert an input into an output.  A business is nothing but an interconnected web of processes since a business is made up of hundreds of processes if not thousands.

Lean

It is a way of thinking as well as a practice to create more value with less resources.

Lean Thinking

It provides a way to specify value, line up value-creating actions in the best sequence, conduct those activities without interruption whenever someone requests them, and perform them more and more effectively.

Value

Value can only be defined by the ultimate customer. And it is only meaningful when expressed in terms of a specific product (a good or a service, and often both at once) which meets the customer needs at a specific price at a specific time.

Waste

Any human activity which absorbs resources but creates no value.

Flow

Flow means that there is no stopping or waiting in the process. It means that the service or service product being created keeps moving and each step is value-added.

Value Stream

The value stream is the set of all the specific actions required to bring a specific product through the three critical management tasks of any business.

  • The problem – solving task
  • The information management task
  • The physical transformation task.

Lean Enterprise

When Lean Thinking goes beyond the firm, to look at the whole: the entire set of activities entailed in creating and producing a specific product. We call Lean Enterprise, a continuing conference of all the concerned parties to create a channel for the entire value stream, dredging away all the muda.
